After getting a bachelor's business degree, an MBA program may be the next step in a student's life, and deciding on a concentration is the next homework assignment. Choosing what to focus on in an MBA program will shape the career of many business students.
Giving students a resource to help them with this tough decision, U.S. News & World Report composed a list of tips to help students choose their MBA concentration.
The news source said it is important students research employers that interest them before deciding on a concentration. Kevin Lieberum, first year MBA student at Washington University, told the news source he wants to work in the auto industry, so he used networking opportunities to seek out potential employers in the field to discuss roles with their companies.
Another strategy MBA students can use when selecting their concentration is look back upon internships and work experience. The news source said students should make a list of things they like and dislike, and apply it to the job market. Students can look at what job opportunities give them the best chance to utilize their skills and then look at the MBA concentration that best fits those skills.
Following a passion is something students should also consider. By doing something they like, students will have more motivation to succeed.
"Having a passion and an excitement about a company and an industry… is more important than any of the other considerations," Lieberum, who recently accepted a finance internship with General Motors, told the source.
The Atlanta Business Chronicle echoes the sentiments of Lieberum, saying that students truly need to know what they want when evaluating MBA programs.
"It boils down to knowing what you want, knowing what you can expect from the programs and doing research about it," Sam Silverstein, media and public affairs manager for The Graduate Management Admission Council, told the news source.
By being honest with themselves, students can truly figure out what they want out of MBA program. A masters in business degree program needs to be something that is part of a student's passion, or else he or she will need to look for other ways to fulfill that passion.
